A Trip through My Wash Day!! (Deep Condition Week)

So I skipped wash day last week so it’s been about 13 days since my last wash and I think it is about that time!

YUP, a Hot mess!! LOL…But that’s ok, nothing a little deep conditioning can’t handle.

But since I went so long with out washing, I decided to do an Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse before I shampooed. Some do this before they shampoo, I’ve seen people do it after they’ve shampooed and conditioned, but for me since I really only like the ACV rinse to cleanse my scalp and I am NOT fond of the smell so,I do it first. Quickie: Do You Really Love Your Curls??

I sometimes wonder,  why bother to cut all your hair and go natural, if you’re just  going to cover it w/ a wig or sew-in; and then say I’m love my curls! But how much can u really love them, if u never show them. I mean I understand protective styles, and would probably understand if you’ve been natural for longer than 6 months, but you’ve only been natural for a month or two. Think about the last time u wore your hair out in public without a wig/weave and then ask yourself that question again, Do u really Love your natural curls??

I Big Chopped!!! It’s All Gone!!!

So I had decided to go natural about a little over a year ago. The last perm I had was at the end of August 2010. So I pretty much started transitioning from them on. I planned on being a long term transitioner. I wanted to wait at least a year before I started cutting off my permed ends. I also only planned on cutting a couple of inches at a time. April 9, 2011 was the day that I chopped it off. I had just finish washing my hair then started was blow drying and got so frustrated trying to blow dry 2 textures of hair and, I said you know what, “I’m Done!” When I got to the hair salon my stylist tried to talk me out of it for about 20 minutes, even almost convinced me to get a bob cut, instead of cutting ALL off. I almost thought I would have to go to a different hair salon, but she came around and did it …There was no actual reaction for me after my stylist cut it. All I thought was “Phew, I finally did it!”  I felt relived. I wasn’t nervous at all. I was VERY pleased with the outcome. I’ve never seen my hair shorter than below my bra strap, I went from about 13+ inches of hair to 2 inches in one day! So it was a big shock for me, my stylist, and everyone in between. But I LOVE my TWA (Teenie Weenie Afro).

My transition process was pretty “simple”  I pretty much stuck with getting sew-ins, or kept the majority of my hair braided in some style. I would pretty much get a sew-in for a month or two; then take it out and get my hair braided in a style for a couple of weeks and then back to my sew-in; pretty much back and forth. It was easier for me personally that way because it got very difficult for me to style and keep the two textures of hair working together, especially since I am not a “hair” person. So I avoided even having to touch my own hair (as far as styling it goes). Once in while I would keep my hair out when I didn’t have time to go get my hair done.

My family and friends were extremely shocked when I cut it, but they knew I was planning this for a while, but I don’t think they actually believed that I would really do it. I didn’t get much negativity as I expected from my family at all. Friends; some like it, some just asked WHY? The first thing my Boyfriend did was run to the beauty supply store a buy my first pik ever!! He loved my cut. Other people, like co-workers (or people who knew me through passing) didn’t say anything negative, but I could tell by the way some people asked “why” it was almost in a disgusted kind of way. Other people said “You’re cutting off what a lot of people pay for.” Some said, “We like it, but we like your long hair better.” I mean of course people like long hair. Shit I LOVE LONG HAIR!!! I’ve always had long hair. But for me their opinion didn’t matter; I know I made the right decision for ME! I am pretty much to the point where I am tired of explaining WHY I cut my hair. I don’t need to explain to anyone why I do anything. Eventually my response to them was “Because I wanted to!” I definitely still want long hair, but I want Natural, unprocessed long hair. I plan to grow my hair back out naturally. I’m 25 and my hair has been permed for as long as I can remember. So I am going to just grow it back out All Natural and enjoying getting to know my REAL hair all over again.

You know before I cut my hair and I would talk about going natural, people asked me, “aren’t you afraid you’ll look like a boy?? How are you gonna make yourself look feminine?” But since I now chopped it all off, I don’t find it necessary for me to “doll-up.” I mean not more than I did prior to cutting my hair. I was always one to be into makeup (I’m a Makeup Artist for Heaven’s Sake), but I didn’t go beyond my normal routine after I cut my hair. If I wear make-up, I wear makeup, if I don’t, I don’t. I don’t find it necessary to over accessorize and wear tons of makeup just to prove I’m feminine. I have breasts, I have booty, and I have lady parts, what’s more feminine than that???

I must say this change has changed a lot of what I use on my hair now…No More Motions or Mizani For me!!! LOL. Now to keep it moisturized I usually use my Carol’s Daughter, Healthy Hair Butter. Once in a while, I do a hot oil treatment with the Tui Hair Oil, also by Carol’s Daughter. I like to keep it simple. I use the co-wash method about 3-4 times per week. Right now, I actually still like the conditioner I use to use with my relaxed hair (Organic Root Stimulator: Olive Oil). It keeps my hair looking healthy. I haven’t really found a “natural” conditioner that I like for my co-washing. 1-2 times a week I do a full wash with shampoo. I really like the Rose Mint Shampoo by Carol’s Daughter as well. For my curls, I must admit I haven’t definitely mastered it. But usually I will wet my hair (in the shower or with a homemade spray {Olive Oil & Water} and just use my Eco Styler Olive Oil Gel. In the beginning I used the Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk for curls, but I find that it made my hair a little too greasy, but I still use it if I’m in a big hurry. Water is the most staple hair products for me because once my hair is wet; the curls come out without anything else. I just use the gel/milk to keep them intact once it dries,

Preserving my curls at night is my problem area, kinda. However it doesn’t really matter to me, b/c my hair isn’t that long right now, and I pretty much get my hair wet everyday (co-washing like every other day). So for right now love of the wash-and-go aspect of being natural. I can’t wait until it gets longer so I can have a PUFF!  This process has been exciting for me and it’s only just beginning!!!
